Battle of Gettysburg
The Battle of Gettysburg was considered a turning point in the Civil War. It lasted 3 days from July 1-3 1863 near Pennsylvania. The Union general was General Joseph Hooker, but three days before the battle, on June 28, 1863, President Abraham replaced him with General George Gordon Meade. On the Confederate side, the general was General Robert Edward Lee. The Union had an army of about 93,921 soldiers and The Confederates had and army of about 71,699 soldiers. General Lee just finished fighting a wonderful victory in the Battle of Chancellorsville and proceeded to attempted a second attack on the North to later be called the Battle of Gettysburg. General Lee hoped to gain fresh supplies for his troops and hurt the presidential election in this invasion. On the first day of battle, July 1, 1863, The North and South forces converge near the Potomac, a city near Maryland. That night, extra soldiers were bought in from both sides to help with the battle to come. The Next day, Lee attacked Meade's army on the plank, side/army. He attacked 5 of Meade's divisions. Then Lee attacked Meade's right plank, attacking 3 divisions. On the third and final day of the battle Lee attempted to attack the center of Meade's army at Culp's Hill: Lee's army barley pierced the Union line due to Pickett-Pettigrew Charge assaults, or Pickets Charge. This Charge assault caused the Confederate army many casualities forcing General Lee to retreat his army on July 4, 1863 making the Battle of Gettysburg a Union win.
