The Civil War 1861-1865
The Civil War began in the Spring of 1861. The were many years of tension between the Northern and Southern states over states rights, slavery, economic differences, and secession. The Election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 caused seven states, South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas, to succeed from the Union. The were four years of fighting from 1861 -1865 and many historic battles such as The Battle of Antietam, Chickamauga, Gettysburg, Jonesborough and many more. Many considered the Civil War as a brother against brother war, or neighbor against neighbor war (referring to the North and South). In the year of 1865, The Confederate states surrendered. The Civil was cost anywhere from 1-2 billion dollars in the North and anywhere from 2-3 billion dollars in the South. It was one of the costliest wars in the Unites States of America. There were about 2.4 million soldiers who fought in the war and almost 700,000 soldiers were killed, millions of soldiers were injured and The South was totally destroyed in terms of population and territory.
