Battle of Chickamauga
On Septmeber 19, 1863, ten miles south of where
Chattanooga is currently located, is where th battle of Chickamaga was located.
The Union army, headed by Major General William S. Rosecrans, was outnumber by
the Confederate army led by General Braxton Bragg. This is on the only battles
that did this in the Civil War. Chickmauga was the second deadliest battle in
this war. Of the approximate sixty thousand Union soldiers, around sixteen
thousand one hindred seventy died. And as for the Confederacy; they had
approximaely sixty-five thousand troops, where as eighteen thousand four hundred
and fifty-four. Confederates did not press their advantage although having won
this battle. The Union retreated to CHattanooga where President Lincoln had time
to replace Rosecrans with General Ulysses Grant, and along with him there were
support.
